How it works

What happens when you scan your site

siseo reads your site the way search engines and AI crawlers do, measures what visitors experience, and turns 182 checks into a short, ranked list of fixes. Here is each step, and what we do and don’t do along the way.

  1. 1

    The crawl

Reading your site like a search engine

SiseoBot starts at your homepage and follows your links, the way Googlebot does. It reads robots.txt first and follows it, reads your sitemaps, and checks up to 200 pages in a free scan or up to 1,000 for a full report.

It fetches a few pages at a time, honours a crawl delay if you set one, and slows down if your server starts to struggle. It never logs in, submits forms or adds anything to a cart.

On every page it records the status code, redirects, canonical and robots tags, title, description, headings, text, images, links, structured data and how long the server took to answer.

  2. 2

    A real browser

What visitors and JavaScript-free crawlers see

A headless Chrome opens your homepage and a few other pages, takes desktop and phone screenshots, and measures whether the phone layout fits the screen.

It also compares each finished page with the HTML your server sent. The difference is what crawlers that don’t run JavaScript miss: text, links, headings or a canonical added by scripts.

  3. 3

    Speed

    Lab tests and real-visitor data

Google’s PageSpeed Insights runs Lighthouse on your homepage, on mobile and desktop. The full report adds one page of each type, such as a product, a category and an article, because they are usually built from different templates.

Where Chrome has enough real visits to your site, siseo uses that field data for the Core Web Vitals, LCP, INP and CLS, at the 75th percentile, the same way Google assesses them.

  4. 4

    AI search

Whether AI answers can find and quote you

siseo reads your robots.txt rules for every major AI crawler and tells search crawlers, assistant fetchers and training crawlers apart, because blocking each has a different cost.

It then requests your homepage as each crawler to see which get the page and which hit a firewall rule, a challenge or an error. In the full report, an AI model also answers questions your customers might ask, without being told your name, to show whether it mentions you.

  5. 5

    182 checks and a score

From findings to one number and a ranked list

Every check passes, fails, or says why it doesn’t apply to your site. A failure costs points according to how serious it is, how much of the site it touches and how sure the check is.

Six areas are scored out of 100 and weighted into the overall score: crawling and indexing 25%, on-page and content 20%, speed 20%, AI search readiness 15%, structured data 10%, and security and trust 10%. A few site-wide failures cap the score whatever else is right, such as a homepage that tells search engines not to index it.

Issues are then ranked by severity, reach and confidence, so the list starts with what will make the biggest difference.

  6. 6

    Your free result

Score, areas and the three fixes that matter most

You see your score, how each area did and your three most important issues, each with why it matters and how to fix it. Only checks siseo is highly confident in can appear here, and never two from the same area, so the three are both right and varied.

The other findings are counted but not sent to your browser until you unlock the full report.

  7. 7

    The full report

    Everything, ready to act on

When you unlock it, siseo re-crawls your site more deeply (up to 1,000 pages), tests speed on each type of page, checks Google’s malware and phishing lists, and writes a summary of your results.

The report has every issue with step-by-step fixes, every page, a section per area, a PDF and a spreadsheet, and one free re-scan within 30 days. It stays in your account under My reports.

For site owners

SiseoBot, our crawler

SiseoBot only visits a site when someone asks siseo to check it. It identifies itself in every request and follows robots.txt, so you can keep it out of all or part of your site:

User-agent: SiseoBot
Disallow: /

Its user agent and how it behaves are described on the SiseoBot page.
